Babysitting Tips
Anyone who loves kids knows that babysitting can be a gratifying experience. It is a win-win situation for all parties involved, the babysitter is able to enjoy time spent with children, the kids can interact with a new person and the parents can enjoy an evening out.
Babysitting is certainly not an easy task, depending on the age and gender of the children. Babysitters should have a natural charismatic attitude towards children as many children, especially toddlers, may not trust others easily, it is the job of the babysitter to empathise with them as best as they can.
All babysitters should live by the Scouts motto, ‘be prepared’. Some may see this as an exaggeration, since babysitters only deal with children; however, it has been proven, time and again, that accidents and mishaps occur most frequently where kids are involved. Petty fights between siblings or their friends often lead to scratching and hair pulling and babysitters must know how to act as referee. Sometimes, real emergencies take place, so babysitters should be equipped with basic CPR knowledge and first aid procedures, as well as have a list of all the important telephone numbers to call if things get really ugly. Babysitters should be prepared to contact local doctor, hospital emergency services, fire brigade and the nearest police station. Some parents have their own preferred personal contacts, so babysitters should have the presence of mind to find out from the family, prior to an emergency occurring, what action they would prefer to be taken.
Babysitters should also be wary about the medical condition of the children they are looking after. Even though there may be a medical cabinet or first aid kit located somewhere in the home, some children could be allergic, even to the common ointments found in many first aid cabinets. A responsible babysitter always keeps track of the medical condition of the children they are minding.
Before the parents set off for the night, babysitters should always ensure that they have the full address of the home they are looking after in hand, in case of a fire or other emergency that may occur. In a stressful situation they might be so overwhelmed by panic that they forget the complete address of the house. Babysitters should also know the location of the house’s fire escape, if there is one, so that they are prepared for the worst.
Finally, it is important for babysitters to be attentive at all times and should keep in mind that prevention is better than cure. Kids often like to sneak around the babysitter, especially if they do not want to do what they are being asked to do; for example going to bed or brushing their teeth. A babysitter should be prepared to juggle several tasks at once, always with one eye on the child or children being looked after.
A good babysitter should treat the children in their care as if they were their own. It is not an easy task, but it is certainly rewarding.
